SCIENCE: ECOSYSTEMS

SCIENCE: HABITATS AND ECOSYSTEMS

HABITAT, COMMUNITY AND ECOSYSTEM

A habitat is the place where plants and animals live. (o medio físico)

A community is all the plants and animals that live in a habitat (os seres vivos).

The habitat is the place where a community lives.

HABITAT + COMMUNITY  = ECOSYSTEM
Medio físico+ seres vivos = ecosistema

Ecosystem is the group of living and nonliving things interacting with each other.
Ecosystems can be small, like a pond, or big, like a lake.

THE FOOD CHAIN (cadea alimentaria)
Animals and plants need energy to live. They get energy from the food.
A food chain shows how each living thing gets its food. A food chain begins with a plant and ends with an animal.

FOOD CHAIN = PRODUCERS+CONSUMERS

  • Plants are called producers because they produce their own food.
  • Animals can´t make their own food so they need to consume (eat) plants and/or other animals. They are called consumers.

"The sun gives energy to the grass, the deer eats the grass, the wolf eats the deer"

There are three groups of CONSUMERS:
  •  Herbivores: animals that only eat  plants.
  •  Carnivores: animals that only eat other animals.
  •  Omnivores: animals that eat plants and animals.
         Humans are also omnivores.
